Private cloud
The part of your infrastructure your phone talks to. It behaves like the big cloud services, except it is in your building and the only person reading your files is you.
What I build
- A private cloud server on the machine described under Servers: files, photo backup from phones, calendars, contacts, shared folders, and messaging for the people who work there.
- Every device synced — phones, laptops, the desk computer — with the same accounts you already understand.
- Reachable from anywhere through an encrypted tunnel, so you can open a file from the road without exposing the server to the internet.
- Your own domain for it, if you want one, so the address is yours and moves with you.
- Nothing scanned, sold or trained on. There is no third party in the loop because there is no third party.
What it is built on
I build these on Nextcloud, which is open source and which I run myself, in several places. If I disappeared tomorrow, another competent person could pick it up — that is a deliberate choice, not an accident.
